A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth and nearby gum tissue. They are usually made of acrylic and used to replace all or some missing teeth. Thanks to new technology and design; it is now possible to have a set that is aesthetic, functional and well-fitting.
Complete Dentures
Complete dentures cover the entire jaw either upper or lower. They rest directly on the gums and take the place of teeth. Impressions are taken, and fittings are required to make sure the fit is just right. This may take multiple visits to Cornell Dental Center; but it is necessary if you want to be able to eat and speak with confidence.
Partial Dentures
Partial dentures are composed of a metal framework with plastic teeth and gum areas that take the place of missing teeth. The framework may include metal or resin clasps that act to hold the partial in place more securely. Dentures are designed to look, feel and fit like your natural teeth. As such, it may take time to adjust to wearing them. However; a little practice might be all it takes. If you’re having problems speaking, try reading out loud. Over time, any difficulties should fade. To alleviate problems with chewing, practice by chewing small pieces of food – on both sides of your mouth. Slowly, you can build up the ability to chew larger pieces!
